Susan Obrant | Couture Crochet

It’s 2011 and DIY is still a theme that continues rings in the New Year. Did you miss the knitting and crochet sessions with your mum, great aunt or grandma? Nothing is more comforting than wearing a hand-knit or crochet piece. Since I was not a patient child, I opted out of the knitting and crochet activities. If you have a similar experience, no need to worry…Chanel, Dior & Chloe have all created gorgeous options for us.

Couture Crochet & Knitting has been leaking into fashion over the past year.  I happened to serendipitously find an amazing New York designer who has applied her fine and commercial art into amazing crochet pieces that are fab!

Understanding a true women’s body, Susan Obrant has one of kind couture crochet pieces that follow palates that are reminiscent of Renaissance painters.  I have experienced her pieces first hand in all the ways a stylist would want to. I have shot them, I have used them for a show, I have created custom along with Susan for a client and I have worn a piece and felt amazing in it.

The designer is constantly inventing new ways to create pieces that are truly unique. A recent favorite treatment of mine is a “Mongolian” type roll on the shoulder for her jackets. Susan’s says it’s a cross between Queen Elizabeth and a Samurai shoulder.

There is no doubt that one of Susan Obrant’s crochet dresses are perfect for resortwear. I love styling them over bikini’s.

We aren’t out of the economy deep dark woods yet, but owning an individual, couture and unique DIY-like piece by Susan Obrant is well worth saving pennies for.

You can also use the rest of the winter season to start your own piece if you are ready to go there. RL
