oscars-08.jpg

Well, you know I had to at least watch the Red Carpet arrivals for the fashion commentary this year.  I usually miss it for some reason and some how usually catch up by watching E Television.  This year, I watched the whole thing, including Barbara Walter’s Special after…yikes. I have to say, my favorite dresses for the evening was Marion Cotilliard, who won best actress for her role in Edit Piaf. Jean-Paul Gautier designed her dress, you probably know that already, and it fit her perfect. Her hair was perfect for a young woman at a formal event and her makeup was tres chic and had a bit of a Chanel groove.  I loved everything about her including her acceptance speech that was so real and geniune. I have always been a fan of Edit Piaf as well, so this was all good…

As far as the men go, it is funny that leading male Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis was my favorite male look. As a thin man, he, or his stylist, picked an abbreviate cut that was fitted.  The chocolate piping was elegant, yet funky and unique…my bff who is a hair stylist,V, mentioned his hair was curled…oh well, he too was fabulous, unique and articulate…thank you SAG for recognizing the truely gifted this year. I must say, the Euro’s rocked it. Ellen Mirrin was fabulous as was Tilda Swinton. Witty, unique and lovely.

As I sat in V’s chair geting my hair cut today, we were of course gossiping about the Oscars. She mentioned she had to watch the view while getting her nails done earlier in the day and they all were going on about no one really knowing the movies that were nominated this year and who had ever even heard of Edit Piaf?…(mouth open) Now, I can understand not watching a movie or two that may be up for an Oscar…but it is so funny how The View is supposed to be a cross section of women in America…I couldn’t disagree more.  I usually use this blog for positive fun things…however I am super fed up with what America has to watch and be subjected to anymore. The View is not my voice and I really am ready for something new out there that really represents women today…it’s not on TV.

My other favorite for the evening was Diablo Cody who wrote Juno. I was so thrilled when she one. It was so refreshing to see a creative, lovely and real person in Hollywood…oh, and the indy song writers too…maybe there is hope for us who dance to a different beat? This year’s Oscars gave me hope. RL

suite-410-looking-at-front-door.jpg

Yesterday I art directed and styled a shoot for Madina Vadache that was really amazing. Our team rocked; Erin on make up and hair and Thorsten Ott was the photographer. We were shooting bio shots for Madina and had a fun editorial story to follow. I am not going to relay too much about that because I want you all to be surprised when it comes out later this year.  But I will tell you that it felt like we were shooting in Europe, not Seattle. We shot it at Suite 410, one of my favorite sexy little bars in Seattle.  Greig hosted us and by the way, is not only a killer bartender, but also a musician and photographer himself.  Needless to say we had a terrific shoot with Madina’s killer Euro entourage on set and in the shots.  I love days like yesterday. Every walk into the grocery store on Valentine’s Day just after work? I don’t think I have otherwise I would not have been suprised by the massive amount of men milling through the aisles, at the floral counter, in the wine shop, etc. Wow, I knew you boys were last minute…

My style notes for today are for the guys. I know I just got back from NYC and you gals are waiting for the report…but I was checking out next fall, so perhaps I should wait a bit to fill you completely in…

Today I popped into Oslo’s in Seattle shopping for one of my best guy friends, T, looking for the perfect shirt for his trip to Mexico…I think I found a killer piece from him, however I was complete intrigued by a jacket by Hickey.  Yes, according to Oslo’s proprietor, John, Hickey is an off-shoot, “irreverent” off-shoot, of Hickey Freeman. Everything John showed me was way cool and something I would like to get on all my guys.  The pot leaf logo is super fun, as well as, tied dyed collared shirts.  The jacket that enthralled me was blue and black paisley on a white base; Two button and would be so great over a t-shirt and jeans in the summer.  I have a photo here, but I would suggest going in and checking it and the whole line.  It is pretty gosh darn sexy. reem-acra-fall-08.jpg

The fall 08 collection for Reem Acra was a beautiful. Her combinations of silk charmeuse with sequins was really compelling for me. I love mixes of texture and her mix this season was amazing. “Jewel tones such as midnight blue, aubergine, mustard and forest green are complemented by metallic neutrals and chocolate brown….the collection represents confident, modern luxury, and a global sense of belonging…” was how she described her collection. The wait was the usual in the tents, but it was worth it for the show.

After the show I made my way back downtown to check out Sandbox, a really beautiful photography studio with locations in NYC and SF, where my bff, L, was working for the week for a quick visit and tour.

Next stop was the NBBJ party where they were showcasing their new offices in the financial district; The new space was lovely, spacious (a commodity in the city as you new), modern and sustainable on top of that. They are going for the LEED certification Gold status. For more on what this means, go to sustainablestyle.org. My gal pal Christine was the interior designer for the project and I couldn’t be more proud of her.

After the party we snuck out for a well deserved steak frites and a glass of wine.

NYC Style Note: Girls with bangs, loose berets and flat boots everywhere….

port-196-fall-fashion-week-_001.gif

We were in the tents Monday night and the favorite show that we check out was the Ports 1961. The invite they sent out was fabulous with fabric swatches, an added bonus for us garmentos.  The intriguing pieces on the runway included all the solid knits in styles and colors inspired by Scotland; deep green, rich purples and vibrant orange-red.  Already for fall it looks like there is going to be lots of texture.  Celebrity sighting ~ Mandy Moore. We also check out the IODICE show. Our fashion scene diva said this: “The coolest (at IODICHE) was the black sheer and solid dresses that they had with interesting big thick yellow knit sweaters…”

We have more to come from shows on Thursday, Friday and more trends for Fall 08. Stay tuned. RL

ny-bryant-park.jpg

Fashion week in Bryant Park started on Friday and while I am usually there the whole week, I am heading there later this week to catch the tail end.  No worries, I have my NY folks on it and they will be hitting a few of the shows and reporting back.  I am excited to see what Reem Acra is up to as her elegance always inspires.  I also typically check out the young designers.  And, you can bet I will let you know what I see inside the tents; it truly is a circus.  So far the dress prevails for Fall 08.  Stand by for more news this week.
